In 1952, the Student Council of Spur High School and their sponsor, Principal Weldon Skinner, had an idea for getting former teachers and students together once a year; thus, the Spur Ex-Student Association was born.

To get the first homecoming from the idea stage to a reality took great enthusiasm and planning. On October 2, 1952, 250 happy exes from far and near spent one wonderful day together with neither a dull or spare moment.

The purpose of the Ex-Student Association is to sponsor and promote fellowship among former students and teachers of Spur ISD. To perpetuate the fond memories and personal friendships acquired by such former students and teachers during their associations and to promote closer cooperation between ex-students and the Spur school system.

In 1959, the Association became a corporation under the officers of Jesse Morrison, Marion Jordan, Pauletta Karr Green, Adrian Rickels, Billy Ray Barrett, Mattie Ellen Powell, Jimmy Green, Barbara Sharp Simmons, Everett Martin and Vergie McMahan Powell. It then received its’ 501(3) c status in 2003.

Homecoming has grown into an annual event of three fun-filled days of activities usually held the first or second weekend in October. The 55th Annual Homecoming was just celebrated in 2007. We must not loose sight of the fact that the past 55 years would not have been possible had it not been for all exes, administration, teachers, staff and community members who have “come home”, sent money, and volunteered their time.

In 2006, the tradition and grandness of homecoming was featured in Texas Monthly Magazine.
